Artist of the Week Spotlight (September 8th, 2014): Kid Detective Kid Detective formed in 2007 with former Eleven Even and Liegia vocalist Kalin Sankey and former Jamaican Bacon axeman Jason Nutt, and blends together the fury and romanticism of 90's indie and alt rock with the angst of modern metalcore for a sound that is new and fresh to the local scene. The band has been together for seven years and steadily building an audience and are not exactly the type of band that is in your face with shows every weekend, but when they do put on a show they will melt your face off. Rounding out the lineup are Tyler Barnes on guitar, Jimmy Niemczura on bass, and Kalen Wallace on drums. In 2010, Kid Detective released their debut album "Because I'm the God Damn Devil," which you could check out on Soundcloud.com. Artist of the Week Spotlight (September 1st, 2014): Third Class Third Class formed in Youngstown in 1999 by Lee Boyle, Jack Boyle, and Pepe Parish. With a sound all their own, Third Class steadily built up a fan base all over Ohio while also doing shows in many other states. Third Class takes an interesting approach to their songwriting, in that many of their lyrics start out as poems written by the members of the band. In fact, some of their works have been published in poetry magazines and even nominated for a Pushcart Prize. In their time together Third Class has garnered press coverage from such media outlets as Under The Radar, NBC News, The CW's Let's Go Youngstown, The Ohio University Post, The Wooster Voice, Cleveland Scene, BrooklynVegan.com, Nashville Audition, and many other. Third Class has built a reputation with their interesting take on pop music, and their always entertaining live performances. |
Artist of the Week Spotlight (August 25th, 2014): Amnesty for Astronauts
Formed in the spring of 2012 in Struthers, Ohio by former Moral Dilemma drummer Joe Carbon and guitarist Chris Byerly, Amnesty for Astronauts has been quickly building a name and a following all over the Youngstown/Warren area. The early lineup was rounded out by singer/songwriter/guitarist Josh Green and bassist Sam Silsbe. The band was not in any rush to get out and do shows so they took their time and spent more than a year working hard, writing songs, and perfecting their sound before adding second vocalist, Chris's sister, Aly Byerly, who also was a veteran of the scene, having played in Abnormal Psych with Joe and Chris in the 90's. The band took to the stage for the first time in the fall of 2013, finally unleashing their hard hitting melodic hardcore punk fused with metal and tribal elements upon the Mahoning Valley. Shortly after beginning a regular schedule of shows, Sam left the band and was replaced by another veteran to the scene, former Pleasure Burn vocalist and former K-Awake drummer Frank Benson, who would take over on bass duties. The band has continued to carry a full schedule of shows with no breaks and no end in sight, even taking the stage at 5 festivals this year, making them a band that you must see in the Younsgtown area. The band also went into Mindrocket studio in June to record a 3 song EP scheduled to be released soon. |
Artist of the Week Spotlight (August 18th, 2014): Perfect Pair
Perfect Pair is an acoustic duo that has been quickly building a loyal following over the last year and a half. Consisting of vocalist Ashley Miller and guitarist Michael Kermec, the duo has become the most in demand cover band in Youngstown. Vocalist Ashley Miller has been around for many years, both as a singer and as a dancer, and guitarist Michael Kermec has played in numerous original and cover bands over his many years. But the one thing that stands out about the band is that they have been able to do what many cover bands have not been able to do over the years and that's bridging the gap between cover bands and original bands. There has always been an unspoken of line between cover bands and original bands in the area and Perfect Pair busted those walls down and have been able to bridge the gap between the two world. Despite being an acoustic act, their live shows are a great party, with excellent audience participation, and the band is able to book shows every weekend without becoming dull or boring because of their excellent stage presence and huge repertoire of songs to choose from, rarely playing the same songs multiple weeks in a row. With songs from many genres including classic rock, pop, dance, glam metal, hard rock, and punk there is something for everyone when you go to see Perfect Pair live. Some may even say that Kermec and Miller are easy on the eyes as well.
